about russell watkins photography

Russell Watkins specialises in large-format, fine-art landscape and architectural photography for commercial and private clients. He is particularly interested in (amongst other things, and in no particular order) archives, libraries, urban landscapes, derelict and abandoned buildings, typologies, digital imaging, large format photography, structures, the Flickr Commons project and, above all, photographs of things that aren't actually there. He thinks that photography is sometimes as much about we can't see as it is about what we can.

Besides the work shown on this website, he has photographed (again amongst many other things, and still in no particular order), countless buildings, 'ceramic tupperware', derelict indian palaces, seascapes, school children conducting physics experiments for the Institute of Physics, handmade vases and candles, no-budget room make-overs for a number of interiors magazines, a 17th-century Japanese 'Lotus' Sutra and fashion photographer Nick Knight's bedroom for Harper's Bazaar magazine. He is disproportionately proud of a photograph of a shed in a back-yard in Winchester that had been 'styled' into a 'garden office' and was taken in freezing rain in January a few years ago for a summer issue of Real Homes magazine. Click here to see it.

He has also been involved in creating and editing a number of public sector websites. He has produced interpretative cultural-history web content for the British Library (creating digital images of over 100,000 items from their collections in the process), and is currently working on a range of multimedia web features for the Department for International Development. He is fascinated by the internet as a publishing medium and by the way in which it has transformed the dissemination of photography beyond the traditional means of print and the gallery wall.

He completed an MA in Photographic Studies at the University of Westminster in 2007, which culminated in an underground (literally - it was in a basement) exhibition called SPAM. He has been a member of the association of photographers since 1998.
